Met and interviewed Yan Cong the other day. A very inspiring meeting that will result in not only one… or two… or maybe three… movies, but most likely a very special edition of A Comic Monthly aswell. Moar from Jakob’s blog:
Chinese artist and comic book writer Yan Cong. An overall awesome guy who rarely leaves his house. Most of his work is according to himself, inspired by his own life, meaning that a fair amount of his comics has himself drawing comics in them + him talking to his cat who also is a main character in a lot of his work. Sadly, China sees no political or economic value in these kind of publishings, and drowns many publishers in unnecessary bureaucracy as a means of silencing them. As a result many of his works are published outside of the legal framework, so to say. It’s interesting because one can hardly imagine anything more apolitical than a comic book geek. But expressing yourself freely is, today, not encouraged in China, thus even harmless comic book geeks sometimes have to break the law.
If you want to find more Chinese comics, the Chinese crew scomix has an OK website. Sadly few books have been published in English so far.
